Project Description

An inspiring place to work and study

The Workshops

The Waters and Acland Workshop ethos of ‘Perfection in the making’ is carried into the creation of our furniture school facility and the design of all our furniture making classess. We have sourced the very best equipment for both the machine and bench rooms. Machines sourced from Switzerland and Germany provide precision and accuracy whilst our  hand tool collection and Festool power tools will inspire all our students to strive for perfection every single day.

The Bench Room

Our student bench room is spacious and equipped to the highest of standards. All students will have their own cabinet making bench and space for on going projects to be constructed and finished. These are not cheap and cheerful benches they are heavy, high quality benches (Sjobergs Elite Range) with thick perfectly flat work surfaces and precision vices. The starting point for precision hand crafted furniture is a sturdy dead flat workbench and we settle for nothing less in both the student and professional bench rooms. A range of high quality hand tools from Lie Nielsen, Clifton, Stanley and other leading brands are provided for testing and use on all our furniture making classes, and fully extracted Festool power tools complete our ‘dream’ workshop facilities.

Our master craftsman and workshop tutors have their own work benches within the student bench room allowing for one on one as well as group demonstrations to take place. Their personal tool collections combined with the pool of tools for student use makes up one of the finest collections of precision hand tools available anywhere. A tool lovers paradise!

The Machine Shop

With massive investment in top quality industrial grade machines the facilities within the machine shop are of an industry leading standard. From the Kundig premium 2 wide belt sander to the Hofmann Spindle moulder no expense was spared in creating a machine shop capable of precision fine furniture making. Getting to know these machines will allow our students to make educated choices when or if they decide to set up their own workshop. All machines meet current Health and Safety regulations and are centrally extracted and maintained.

The machine shop includes:

Crosscut saw
Surface planer(Hofmann)
SpindleMoulder (with tenoning facilities)
Wide belt sander (Kundig Premium 2)

Aipress Membrane Press

Commercial Bench Room

Alongside the student bench room is the commercial bench room. This is where Waters and Acland bespoke commissions are created and we feel strongly that the ‘open door’ connection between the student and commercial bench rooms will provide all our students with an insight into the workings of a genuine award winning commercial workshop. When professional projects are at interesting points of development Question and Answer sessions are held within the commercial bench room in order to analyse advanced techniques and to discuss the projects from design to final finish.

The Waters and Acland gallery is located alongside the workshop facilities and is open to the public 5 days a week. A collection of Waters and Acland fine furniture is permanently on display along with selected student work, fine art and prints. As a commercial workshop the gallery is key in securing commissioned work but also acts as inspiration for our students as they are able to observe the commercial aspects of turning the designing and making of fine furniture into a commercial reality.

Design Studio

Our recently completed first floor extension has allowed us the luxury of creating a dedicated space for all things design related. The design studio is where Will produces all the designs for our bespoke work whilst also providing our students with one and one as well as group design tutorials. 3D design is carried out on both Mac and PC and there is a hot desk available if students want to bring in lap tops. Our students spend many hours within the design studio working hard to resolve every aspect of every piece designed and made during their time in the school.

Development Workshop

The development workshop is the latest edition to our facilities. Comprising of a bench room for 4 makers and a fully equipped machine shop this is a place for those who have completed their designer maker course to rent space and spend time continuing to develop as furniture makers. The purpose of this facility is to bridge the gap between completing a course and starting the next chapter of their journeys as furniture designer makers be that through gaining employment, setting up home workshops or starting businesses.

Those renting space within the development workshop can continue to design and make personal projects, work on private commissions or when available and suitable work on professional commissions for Waters and Acland.
